The Brothers Grim || @redmako
Bolin was walking the calm streets with Mako. He was glad he could finally spend time with his brother, with him being a cop now. The two bending brothers were going to the noodle shop to get some food, just like the old days.
“When was the last time I ate?” He wondered. “Hmph, I only ate breakfast today, no wonder why my stomach is killing me”
The earthbender tried to pay attention to what his brother was saying, but the thought of food clouded his mind. He was able to pick up something Mako was talking about, something about an increase in disappearances and bodies showing up. They soon arrived at the restaurant, much to Bolin’s appraisal, and went inside.
“Finally! Sorry bro, but you’ll have to finish that thought later. I have a hole in my stomach that needs to be filled up!” he said, running into the restaurant.
The earthbender soon stuffed his, and Pabbo’s, face with food. The warm food felt euphoric to the hungry Bolin. When his plate was cleaned of food, he let out a loud belch and finished by wiping his mouth with the napkin.
“That definitely hit the spot.” He said, patting his stomach with his hands.
The two brothers paid the bill and proceeded to head back to the island. It was late enough for the street lights to be on, but early enough for a decent amount of people to still be on the streets.
“So how is everything bro? With you being a cop now and all. Oh, and how’s Korr-“ the sentence was soon interrupted by a girl screaming.
Bolin was the first to run to the source of the scream. He soon reached the girl, only to discover something he’s never seen before. A tall man was standing over a young woman; her face was pale and emotionless. What stunned Bolin the most was the blue color that was coming out of the girl’s mouth and going into the man’s mouth.
“What is he doing to her?” Bolin wondered.
The man released the girl and looked towards the earthbender. His face was hides by a hood, but his mouth was visible, along with sharp, animal-like teeth. The thing smiled at the two brothers before disappearing around the corner. The frightened Bolin ran to the limp girl on the ground.
“She…. She’s dead Mako. What was that thing? It sucked…. It sucked the life out of her! Mako, what do we do?” he said, tears filling his eyes from the sight of the young girl. Bolin felt helpless, just as hopeless as when Amon was about to take his bending,
“Amon was a man though, that… that was not a man. That was something worse.”
The day started out exceptionally well and the two bending brothers decided to go on a walk. It’s been a while since they’ve had a proper get together. Spending time with him would be something nice, if it weren’t for the fact that he’s stressed over the sudden massive killings that’s arising through the streets of Republic City. It’s like a parasite that manifested under the task force’s nose. When they finally acknowledged it, there had been tens of people that were reportedly murdered. Although the information was to be kept as top secret, Mako figured it wouldn’t be too bad if he were to vent out to his younger brother.
He spoke of the plans that they brewed and how dangerous things will be. There were many inquiries that escaped his lips but none of them were answered by his wondering younger brother whose attention was elsewhere. Despite of the rude demeanor, the fire bender still found it quite endearing, seeing his expression alter from boredom to enthusiasm. It was almost too amusing to watch. With a smudge of grin etching across his lips, Mako then followed him to the restaurant.
It was nice having a full meal, granted that he was a cop now, it meant that he had a better pay. From time to time, recollections of their nonage would flood back and he’d ponder how he managed to raise Bolin alone. Without the help of any guidance, just by pure whim and a little bit of luck, he raised his brother by himself.
Upon finishing the meal, they eventually paid then left the restaurant with a satisfied stomach. Dusk was rolling in and the fire bender figured that it was too early to leave. Perhaps a couple more rounds in the park, just to stroll around for old time sake wouldn’t be too bad. The sudden abrupt halt in Bolin’s sentence caused the fire bender to glimpse at his brother enquiringly. The staggering peer that the young earth bender expressed made his brows furrowed as he followed the direction where he’s staring at.
Mako stood there, stiff and astonished with the frightening scene that’s happening before him. A man with an ominous aura emitting around him, sucked the girl’s soul. The fire bender’s eyes zoomed out, turning microscopic as he strained himself from shaking. No words escaped his lips as his amber eyes continued to watch in horror. The hair on the back of his neck stood upon noticing the man’s sly grin appointing to them. It was a mere smirk but he felt tingles creep on his spine, making him suddenly feel cold.
Once the man took his exit, the fire bender finally exhaled. He hadn’t known that he’s been holding his breath until the lack of air became unbearable. Finally snapping out of his trance, he approached his weeping brother. With observing eyes, he studied the corpse noting the similarities with all the other murder cases. The most logical idea is to call the cops. Fortunately they gave him a device to contact them despite of the long distance. Mako endeavored to sound as calm as possible, aiming for a reassuring voice to calm not only him, but Bolin as well. With the given approval, the pubescent then took a look at his brother who held a frightened surface.
“Everything will be fine, Bo….” The assurance in his voice faltered into whispers until it became nothing but white lies. Will everything be ok? Spirits only knows.
The cops arrived a few minutes after the initial call. They were interrogated almost immediately however, seeing that Mako is a cop too, they didn’t find the need to ask his younger brother. Mako gave all the facts, details, and everything he can recall. It was like a vivid nightmare came to life and it frightened him for the safety of Republic City. Minutes of surveying had gone by before finally finishing up and letting him go. Once he was liberated from the questioning, he headed to give heed to Bolin. “Bo, I need you to go home….I’ll be doing cop duties tonight…”
